Today in study group we discussed revising your essay. We also were introduced to logical fallacies in arguments.
You were given back your rough drafts with my comments and suggestions, along with the rubric.
HW due Tuesday March 21:
Final drafts (rough drafts also are to be returned to me). Your final draft needs to be typed. You may email it to me if desired. Spelling Power 23-24.

Tuesday - today we read the nonfiction article "Nerd Alert: Reading is Good For Your Health." We had small-group discussion, and began our responses to the 3 questions at the end. You will need to finish this and submit to me on Thursday.
Thursday - today we read and discussed Animal Farm Ch. 7 (9th) and the short story "The Pedestrian" by Ray Bradbury (10th).
HW due Tuesday March 28:
9th - Animal Farm Ch. 7 Response Activities (complete Comprehension 1-15, Discussion, Who?, Respond, and Recall and Interpret). 10th - finish "The Pedestrian" response. Both: Spelling Power 25-26.
Mar. 28 -30
Tuesday:
9th - today will continued to look at the historical background in Europe at the time Animal Farm was written. We discussed how the book is an allegory of Communist-era Russia, specifically Lenin and Stalin.
10th - we discussed the differences between the short story and the teleplay of "The Pedestrian." We examined how Bradbury added additional imagery and metaphor in the teleplay, as well as the addition of a character. We also continued our discussion of dystopian societies as portrayed in science fiction.
Both: we began reading the nonfiction article "Talking to Our Devices" and annotating and responding.
HW due Thursday: finish nonfiction article and respond to all of the questions (if you haven't already done so).
Thursday:
9th: we discussed the final two chapters of Animal Farm.
10th: we read and discussed the short story "How Much Land Does a Man Need?" by Leo Tolstoy.
HW due Tuesday April 04:
9th: Animal Farm Chapters 9-10 activity
10th: Finish the Tolstoy article and questions. Since this is a fairly big assignment, it will be due Thursday April 06.

Tuesday: Today both grades read and discussed the following nonfiction article: "5 New Brain Disorders that Were Born Out of the Digital Age". This was completed during study group. 9th grade also discussed more of the differences between economic systems as shown in Animal Farm. No HW due Thursday.
Thursday: In both grades, we discussed and reviewed the biographies of Orwell (9th) and Tolstoy and Dostoevsky (10th). We looked specifically at the social, political, and cultural influences of all three authors, what their primary theme(s) were, and the various influences that shaped their lives and informed their writing.
