Hello! My name is Mike Keene, and I will be your teacher for Middle School English and Middle School Project Lead the Way (PLTW) courses.
I have been teaching for over 18 years. My roots with TLC go way back to 2001 when a lot of the current faculty, including myself, worked at a different school in a different district. I started at TLC in 2004 and stayed through 2007. I returned 2 years ago, and am excited to be continuing as part of the TLC faculty. I hold a BA in English and a Professional Clear Single Subject Credential in English. I have taught in a wide variety of academic settings, and my previous assignment before returning to TLC was teaching adult ESL students. I enjoyed meeting students from all around the world, learning about their cultures, languages, and customs. I have found that the more we get to know each other, the more we realize that we are all basically the same!
This academic year I will be teaching English 9-10 and PLTW Gateway to Technology (GTT) grades 6-8 at the Chula Vista Resource Center.
When I am not teaching, I enjoy spending time with my 2 beautiful boys, Ian and Liam. As a father of an 11-year-old and a 7-year- old, I am learning to see the world through their eyes. It's a wonderful thing, and both of my boys are teaching me so much.
In addition to teaching English, I have a really cool hobby - my boys and I both enjoy building and launching model and high-power rockets. I am fortunate to be able to incorporate my love of teaching with my love of science. I have taught Homer Hickam's Rocket Boys (adapted to film as October Sky - an anagram of the book title), and the students completed both a written project on the book and participated in several build sessions where they got to build, and eventually fly, their own model rocket at Fiesta Island!
I am looking forward to a fun and successful year working with you and your student!
